The open layout of BC’s new curriculum allowed me to weave units together in a thematic way, something that is not often done with intermediate grades. During my long practicum I created a thematic unit focussed on ancient Egypt. In this unit, I was able to incorporate a large Inquiry Project, Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, and Art lessons. This allowed students to combine their learning and see links between various types of knowledge they had realized throughout the term.
The freedom that BC’s new curriculum provides allows me to teach to the whole child; their body, mind, and heart. I engage students in physical activity breaks and mindfulness exercises. and my daily reflection journals, as well as the MindUP curriculum, lead students through a journey to discover their self. My multi-faceted approach has allows me to teach students about their own capacities to think, engage, and feel with their whole person.
